Building Form with Planes

Human form through planar construction

Even the human form, can be broken down into planes. Breaking down forms into planes helps the artist create convincing volume. Pictured below is the Asaro head, a teaching tool to helps artist comprehend the planes of the head. And below that are a few paintings where the artist is painting the planes to create the form.

If one looks closely at the painting of a human hand below, one can see flat plane like brush marks. One can see that the painter conceptualized the hand in planes. Conceptualizing of the forms as planar solids often helps the painter render the form in a more volumetric manner.
